1 Corinthians
Chapter 6
Bible TextNotes and Thoughts
1 ¶ Dare any of you, having a complaint against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?
2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? And if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life?
4 If then ye have judgments to make on things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church!
5 I speak to shame you! Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you, no, not one, who shall be able to judge between his brethren?
6 But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers!
7 Now therefore, there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one against another. Why do ye not rather accept wrong? Why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?
8 Nay, ye do wrong and defraud, and that your own brethren!
9 ¶ Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the Kingdom of God? Be not deceived: Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners shall inherit the Kingdom of God.
11 And such were some of you. But ye are washed, ye are sanctified, ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
12 ¶ "All things are lawful unto me," but all things are not expedient. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be brought under the power of any.
13 "Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats," but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.
14 And God hath both raised up the Lord and will also raise up us by His own power.
15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them the members of a harlot? God forbid!
16 What? Know ye not that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? "For two," saith He, "shall be one flesh."
17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit with Him.
18 Flee fornication. Every other sin which a man doeth is outside the body, but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
19 What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you and which ye have from God, and that ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
v1-8 Christian taking Christian to court.
The church of Corinth was showing the world a very poor testimony to the unbelievers, they were taking each other into the courts of law, the problems were not just civil but there is indication (2 Cor 7:1,2) that they had spiritual disagreements and they were taking these to the courts as well.
v1-5 Paul asks "how can you take your problems before unbelievers when you will one day be helping in judging the world, even fallen angels." They should have been sorting out their problems in the church.
v4 Maybe Paul was being sarcastic by saying that "even the weakest in the church can do the judging better," or perhaps Paul was saying that God can use the weakest in His control.
v7 Suggests that they were losing out in the courts, they were disgracing the Lord by their actions. Look at what Jesus said in Matt 5:39-48.
v9-14 Christians and Evil.
In v9,10 Paul lists the kind of people who will not enter God’s future kingdom, God hates any type of sexual sins. "Effeminate’s" and "abusers" referring to Homosexuality. Paul also dealt with this subject in Rom 1:26-27.
v11 You were like these once, but God justified you through Jesus.
Because of what God has done for them they should be using their bodies for the glory of God, but the Corinthians were misusing their freedom v12. They also felt that they were free to have whatever was their desires, whether it was food or sex. v13. God gave sex at creation as part of the joining of male and female in marriage and procreation (See Gen 2:24. Misuse can only lead to health and social danger, there are many sexually transmitted killer diseases.
v18 Paul also points out that fornication was a sin against the whole body.
v14-18 The believers body belongs to Christ.
If a person is a member of the Body of Christ, "joined unto the Lord" v17, how can it be used in sinful acts as well?
V16 shows that the church members were actually visiting prostitutes, probably using those in the temple of Aphrodite’s in Corinth.
v19,20 Temple of the Holy Spirit.
Finally Paul reminds them that God the Holy Spirit has made their bodies the Temple of God. So God the Father created our bodies, Jesus bought it and made it part of His body, and the Holy Spirit wants yours to be His Temple and be used for the Glory of God.
How can we use our bodies for anything evil? Gal 6:7-8; 1 John 3:1-10; "Be ye holy, for I am holy" 1 Peter 1:14-16.
